Am I too stupid for chess?

Yeah chess isn't for smart people. It's a stereotype that the outside thinks is true, although really isn't. Of course I'm not saying that it's not completely for smart people, as certain skills like memorization may help to be a better player, just that it isn't THAT reliant on being smart, as you could achieve grandmaster with hard work.

I think most grandmasters have to be smarter than the average person

As I said, being smart helps, but being bad in chess definitely does not say you are stupid.

I'm about to quit chess. I don't think I'm suited to chess although I enjoy it but losing constantly because of stupid mistakes of mine just frustrates me more and more. Sorry for my bad english.

Why you are lefting your pieces unguarded left and right? You shouldn't put piece just like that "I will put figure here"? You started with putting pawn, unguarded. Then, few moves later you left bishop just like that. On the end you did same with the queen, obviously already in anger of previous mistakes. The errors with pawn and with bishop are not the same, why? With pawn, you are going directly on attacked square and with bishop, there is difference, you properly put it first time on free square BUT when pawn attacked the bishop, you should move bishop out ALREADY ON THE NEXT NEXT NEXT move. Opponent won't wait. Don't count on opponent won't see something or HE WOULD PLAY JUST HOW YOU WANT. IT WON'T HAPPEN and THAT'S KNOWN UNDER THE NAME "hope chess", which is the mistake of much stronger players also. You are coming from Lasker's country, world champion for 30 years, so believe in your genes.

Chess isn't that much related to IQ. I think chess is 75% knowledge and pattern recognition.

Your English is not too bad. As far as games go, look at all the people who suck at golf and tennis and quite frankly will never get better no matter how much coaching they get and no matter how hard they try. Regardless, they still enjoy playing even though they have little inborn talent to get better. Chess is no different in that regard. Try to improve now and then, of course, but realize that you probably will never get to be a good player unless you are fairly young. In that case, you might see a lot of improvement but I sincerely believe that we all have a limit to how good we can be in anything. That is reality.

Having seen a bunch of dopes play chess over half a century, I can't imagine who would fit your category. People play chess, because they like to play chess, not because they're great at it.

Do whatever you do but stop agonizing about it in public, it's unseemly.

The problem with beginners is that they think they can immediately learn something and become a master at it. This does not only hold true for chess. It's like saying "I am so bad at basketball, my opponent keeps stealing the basketball from my hands and scores 10 times more than me" after playing for a week or saying "I am so bad at art. My shading is so bad and all proportions are wrong" after drawing for a week. I've been playing chess since I was around 6 or 7. I started taking chess as a serious hobby since I was 11 and It's been two years. I haven't just suddenly realized what I was doing wrong. I learnt pins, forks, discovered checks/attacks, back rank, what not. I learnt what traps I'm falling for and learnt openings. And believe me when I say this, I haven't even learnt half the things out there, even after 6 years of playing and 2 years of practicing. Chess is a vast game. Just like how in art, you can't perfect drawing potraits once you learn shading, you cant perfect chess by playing 100 games. Finally chess is not the thing for everyone, if you are really passionate about it continue playing, or go find your thing. Happy playing!!

Learning is like Ln graph. Search it up if you don't get it. Progress will be slow at first and then it should skyrocket after awhile.

Wow, I didn't think this thread would get that big. Thanks for the many tips and PMs. I will push through and not give up. Maybe at the beginning of 2024 I will give a small update on how things are going. lessons

(I didn't make the effort to read the topic outside of the title)

I think some people have a misunderstanding of what chess is, have difficulty to distinguish between opinion and fact, are quite lazy which means they tend to be fooled by fake news or maybe troll ant*cs .

1 : To play chess is not to play tic-tac-toe, memory card or to take an IQ test.

2 : If a GM says this position is a draw :

this cannot be a fact because he can't prove it but if a super super calculator has calculated everything from this position and established that it is, with a perfect play, (for example) a win for White this cannot be an opinion because computer can prove and demonstrate it over and over.

3 : I inquire about the Sicilian Defense, I look for on the net and (for the example) I find an article of super GM called Milo Yiannopoulos on 4Chan telling that this is a refuted opening only played by big noobs and it is very weak openning.

Fake news, disinformation or bad joke it exists ! It is not because (for the example) Milo presents himself as a super GM that he is necessarily a super GM and 4Chan is not a trustworthy place of information but a den of trolls (where there are probably also cybercriminals).

a : After for people with an intellectual complex or suffering from moral violence in connection with the theme of intellectual inferiority/superiority already there is artificial intelligence which on the long term is stronger than human players and the artificial intelligence is not a high or low IQ but a no brain.

b : To me important things in life are to throw our ego in the trash and to strengthen ourself psychologically because notably evil, bad manipulators also exist and more an individual has ego and more he is psychologically weakened and easier it will be to manipulate and abuse .

You are not too stupid for chess. I offer resources for beginners to get better in chess.

1) I offer a Twitch channel for beginners so they can get better in chess. Send me a game and I’ll analyze your games for free on my Twitch livestream. I livestream every Monday at 9:30pm PST, Wednesday at 8pm PST and Friday at 2pm PST.

Feel free to challenge me to a game and I’ll analyze the game afterwards!

2)

I also offer a free beginner’s free eBook on my website, www.ChessByLauren.com in case you are interested.

3) Beginners needs to learn basic tactics such as the fork, discovered attack, pin, and more. I offer interactive puzzles on my website:

4)

If you are serious about chess, I highly recommend you hiring a chess coach to help you.

  1. Here are some other general tips to help you: Before each move, I highly encourage you ask questions before every move such as, “If I move here, is it safe?”, “Can I safely capture a piece?”, and more. Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side. Be VERY CONSISTENT with this.

I hope that this helps!

I used to ask myself the same question and I'm MENSA member, lol. The simple fact that you reached out on an open forum for assistance shows that the issue here is not stupidity. It's a matter of knowledge, wisdom and understanding. Without these a person is ignorant, not stupid and fortunately for the ignorant they have a chance to be enlightened. As we all know you can't fix stupid. So ask yourself a simple question.

Do I enjoy playing the game of chess or do I only enjoy it only when I win?

Think about a game you play where you just enjoy actually playing it so much you could care less whether you win or loose, we all have them, mine is golf! I suck at it, you want to lose your money? be my team mate, it's guaranteed, lol. Yet I could care less and it ain't cheap to feel that way at $50 a round. Now I could pay for a Pro to give me lessons and I could up my game that way for sure. Is that my intent, to start my "trek" on becoming the next Tiger Woods? Or am I taking a pleasurable pastime from pure enjoyment to what can now be considered a grinding, working practice routine? Furthermore in doing so am I ruing my pure enjoyment of the game because now obviously I'm concerned about winning.

My point, if you want to win more at chess then you are going to have to a take a path to enlightenment, which will require you to work instead of just play. If you truly enjoy the game then maybe just playing it instead of worrying whether or not you are ever going to beat Magnus would be your better path.

Chess is not like mastering dominos or being the man on a spades table, you aren't going to figure it out in a weekend. It's a love and hate relationship and at many times will feel like you are ice skating uphill backwards. You will learn to love winning as much as you do loosing. Winning for the obvious reasons and losing because you know you are going to figure out why and that it will lead to an improvement in your game.

If you are willing to put in the work to become better and this excites you and your ambitions for the game then I would highly agree with getting you a coach so you can start on a solid foundation and dodge many of the bullets that players starting on their own with no guidance are surely to get hit by.

Good luck to you and your endeavors.
