Hello!  My name is Lauren Goodkind and I’m a respected  chess coach and chess YouTuber based in California:

I have a lot of tips and resources to help you improve your chess skills so you can win more games.

-I  offer a  free beginner’s free eBook on my website, in case you are interested. The book is about asking questions before each move.

-Learn basic tactics such as the fork, discovered attack, pin, and more.  I offer interactive puzzles on my website:

-I recommend two books for you: “50 Poison Pieces”   and “Queen For A Day: The Girl’s Guide To Chess Mastery.”  Both books are available on Amazon.com.  Both books are endorsed by chess masters!

-If you are serious about chess, I highly recommend you hiring a chess coach to help you.

-Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side. Always as, “If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?”

-Play with a slow time control such as G/30 so you have time to think before each move.

I hope that this helps.

Try going through the lessons and videos here on chess.com.  I would also recommend the chessbrah youtube series on chess habits.  There are plenty of youtube videos by grandmasters that are far better than most purchased items.  The tactics on this site would also help your game.

You don't need to spend alot of money on chess training materials, these days this knowledge is given away or at very cheap prices.

Always check your intended move is no blunder before you play it. This little mental discipline alone is enough to get to 1500. As long as you hang pieces and pawns all the rest is in vain.

I'm USCF 1800.

Some advice.

No blundering.  Keep your pieces safe.

practice everyday.

I suggest Chess For Dummies book by FM James Eade.

Chess For Dummies: Eade, James: 9781118016954: Amazon.com: Books

This book helped me breaking 1000 from USCF 800.

I suggest another book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess by GM Patrick Wolff.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess, Third Edition: Wolff, Patrick: 9781592573165: Amazon.com: Books

This book helped me to USCF 1500 from 1000.

I gained 200 points a year by practicing everyday.

Do tactics, and be careful not to blunder.

“But BroiledRat!” you may ask “I’m already doing tactics and being careful not to blunder”

So was I at your level, and I still severely blunder every couple of games and miss basic tactics from time to time.

Do those things more, much more than you are already doing and your rating will increase.

You never really outgrow tactics.

In a sample of 32 classical games (so not a massive sample size by any means, but still enough to be insightful) played by players exclusively in the 2000-2200 FIDE rating range, 63% of these games where decided by tactical errors.

All from expert or master level players, who make errors far more infrequently than you or I, and tactics were still the deciding factor in the majority of their games.

This data was presented in the book “The Woodpecker Method” for anyone interested.

Their have been times where I have done over 200 tactics puzzles in a single day, and I am far and away from being the hardest working player around.

So really, those two things can get you much further than you appreciate, if you simply put more work into them.

Play training games in longer time controls against strong opposition (preferably a human, but if you have no friends like me, a 2200+ engine will work just fine) and really focus on avoiding blunders before playing each move.

Keep doing this and eventually it should become second nature to avoid simple one move blunders.

Hey man, I hit 1,000 about a month ago and what helped me was playing a lot of games and making sure to cover my blind spots (specifically long bishop diagonals) to ensure I don’t make silly one move blunders

Play lots of rapid games 15 mins a side. Not blitz or bullet. Study games after. Learn from mistakes.
