Dear Chess Friends,

Today, we're diving into one of the most challenging checkmates in chess — the bishop and knight mate.

This is a true test of endgame technique. It doesn’t come up often, but when it does, you’ll want to be ready. We’ll go step-by-step through the key ideas, show you how to drive the king to the right corner, and break down the patterns you need to master this elegant finish.

Whether you’re learning it for the first time or just brushing up, this is one of those endgames that separates the serious players from the rest.
Let’s jump in!

I actually had this in a game about a rapid week ago. My opponent has the knight and bishop but only like 30 seconds so I thought no way they get the checkmate but they ended up getting it.

Wow, he was good then! That's why it's really useful to learn these kind of things.

I'm impressed. I think I've played around 15,000 games of chess in my life, and I've never once had either side of this endgame.

Which leads me to think it would be a better use of my time to study, say, rook endings, or opening prep, rather than this. Sure, maybe it would come in handy sometime around game #25,000 -- but by then I'd have forgotten what I'm supposed to do anyway...

Wekl, this endgame is rare, but I think a benefit one can get by studying it is experience with and/or knowhow on working with a combination of a bishop and a knight. And that might come in handy in various parts of the game.

Bishop + knight is extremely far away from being a beginner endgame. A true beginner's head would explode if he tries to learn this.

I agree with magipi. Bishop/Knight and Bishop/Bishop checkmates are good to know for intermediates and advanced players, but will someone under 1000 elo ever reach this position? I doubt it. If a person is in this elo range, they need to focus on sticking to good basic principles and not hanging their pieces.

Very good instruction though from OP. I just disagree on the skill level it's being suggested to.
