Beginner questions

Hello!

I'm a beginner, and while playing I always struggle with certain positions that I come across regularly.

As Black, I Can defend against the Scholar's Mate; although I end up in a losing position, either losing some of my pieces or just being unable to push the attack back. I just don't know what series of move is best when people attempt this.

Another question I always ask myself; What side do I Castle on in specific situations? I always end up castling and after the game analysis tells me it was a mistake,

Not sure if it's against chess rules to ask, but what sites are best for ranked puzzles which do not need a subscription? as I do the daily puzzles I Can, and I actually do see an improvement from them in game but as I do not have a subscription I do not get to learn for the full amount of time I could / would like too.

Does anyone have a list of the best openings? I read up on openings, and I see the analysis / amount of games won / lost with them, although I struggle actually seeing the best openings from them.

Thank you if you decide to answer these! Just a few questions I had on my mind.

OK

About the scholar's mate:

Which side to castle on?

Generally, if you are attacking, castle on the Oppisite side as your opponent.

if you do not want to attack or be attacked, castle on same side

Chesstempo.com is really good

And best openings?

It depends on your play-style.

If you enjoy attacking, play the Sicilian, King's Indian, Italian Game. If you like positional chess, try the Ruy Lopez or Queen's Gambit, the Caro Kann or French, and Queen's Indian

Hi ItsHypers. If you struggle too much against attacks on f7 in 1.e4-e5 openings, maybe you should consider playing some defense based on the e6/d5 pawn set up (French, Caro-Kahn, Scandinavian, some variations of the Sicilian...) at least until you feel safe enough to confront such basic assaults.

So you can play the games you really care not to lose, with a more solid defense, and keep experimenting (and checking what engine says after the game) in other games.

Yeah I do need to learn more defences tactics as I do more attacking usually. thank you for the tips!

Re: puzzle limitations: free accounts get one puzzle rush per day in addition to the five daily rated puzzles.

My favorite form of puzzle rush is survival mode. You're presented with a series of puzzles, starting with easy ones (like 100 rating) and increasing in difficulty, and you can continue solving puzzles, with no time limit, until you get three incorrect. I like survival mode because it reinforces the fundamentals contained in the lower-rated puzzles, and it emphasizes correctness rather than speed.
