Best opening for black against e4

I think the best is French defence starting with the e6.
Any asymetrical opening works well against 1.e4 French, Sicilian and Carro are a family of asymetrical openings, even the Scandi gets Carro Kann pawn structures so is part of that group. The Soviets favoured French, Sicilian and Carro for those unbalanced positions and fighting openings. I would say, of the 3 the French may be the easiest to weild, the Carro the most balanced if understood and the Sicilian the most variable. But I don't play the Carro Kann, the others I have played and do well in at my level.
