Recommendations 1.e4 Scotch, open Sicilian, Exchange French and Exchange Caro as white, Scandinavian as Black. 1.d4 play 2.c4 and cover the normal lines as white. As black Dutch and Slav. You get pleanty of open game experience with e4. Closed experience with d4. Some Asymetrical experience with the Dutch, you can also play KID alternating with it if you like for fun. Note in 1.e4 openings move d4 can be played on the second or third moves well against Petrov, Philadore/Black Lion, Sicilian, French and Caro Kann. Not to say Italian or Spanish are not fun, but if you play 1.e5 you will see lots of them to learn about. So maybe alternate between Scandinavian and 1.e5.

As white... I play the Stonewall attack and the Colle Koltanowski. The theory of both interrelate. Both offer reverse color lines when Black attempts to play Anti-Colle or Anti Stonewall lines. Also... One will have to develop separate lines for the Indian defenses (That said the Colle Koltanowski setup works well against the QID and the Benoni. And the Stonewall Attack works well against the KID and Grunfeld.

Here is a miniature that highlights the benefits of having The Stonewall attack and the Colle Koltanowski as your main openings.
