If they can replace the knight with knight after you take it, its not good play bishop back there. If they are black and have played b6 there dont give your bishop too early cause you will need it in defence. And taking knight is ok if its theory or you have a fixed plan

The basic idea I have is that, if it’s my bad bishop, take the knight because I’m gaining a stronger piece. If their good bishop is attacking my knight, kick their good bishop with my pawn.
Is there more to this or do I generally have the right idea?
