The rules are just the same in over the board games, in your example the Knight cannot be moved. If it's a friendly game you probably just point it out and let the opponent make another move. If it's a tournament game then pause the clock and call over the arbiter.
Can pieces move when pinned in over the board games?
OTB is weird. With no program to enforce the rules, the players must do so, with an official as well at tournaments. But the thing is, you have to notice it and call it out in the moment, at which point the player is forced to make a different move. You do not lose from such mistakes. A lot of places where people play a lot without any officials, some of the players try to cheat by making such moves, esp the guys that play for money -- you have to be constantly alert to that.
this is really a problem in just a few places ... beginners/children playing in tournaments, friendly play (including the intentional cheating above)... it is rare for advanced/experienced players to make such mistakes.
The various tournament rulebooks are online, if you want to dig in, but generally, its just going to end up being a do over or play on (if not noticed, or ignored on purpose to some advantage).
Okay, so I basically started playing chess a few months back. I have only exclusively played chess online and never over the board. I wanted to know how pinning works over the board games. For example, if a knight is pinned to the king by a bishop, in online games.. the knight simply can't move. However, in over-the-board games, is it considered an illegal move if the player moves the knight, OR, if he does move the knight, he loses automatically cause then I take his king?
