Chess is not a brain game,.
Even at beginner level or low time, there is always a thinking process behind every move. Even if it’s poorly or inaccurate. Let‘s imagine I show you a random chess position:
I am pretty sure you literally won’t be able to just play a random move.
You can play the first move that comes to your mind without calculating, but you only found this move because of your experience and your sense for natural looking moves. This is related to your brain.
You can play the first legal move you see, but this is only possible, because of your experience / knowledge, how the pieces move and even your information processing which is related to your brain.
You even could not know how the pieces move and still understand, that a piece stands on a certain square, which already requires brain usage.
Memory, sense, intuition, calculation, information processing and understanding all requires brain usage. So you use your brain in every chess situation. Chess is a brain game.
Chess isn’t just a board and some pieces, it’s constant decision-making. You’re not getting very far without actually thinking. By the way, I recommend this site if you are looking for even more interesting games.
There are two ways to consider the proposition "chess is a brain game".
1°) It would mean one is using their brain only in order to play chess (executing brain commands by hand doesn't count).
2°) It would mean that the brain has the biggest, or most important part in playing chess.
In my opinion, it's easy to refute the first case. This has been done so many times in this forum, I don't feel like repeating it all. Nerves, energy, hydration, sleep... Blah blah blah.
The second case is more arguable.
But is it true?
Well, guess what, I don't know.
