Chess noob here. I don’t understand this move.

My terrible opening moves aside, why is bishop to f7 the right play in this situation? Won’t the king just take my bishop, then I’ve just lost my bishop in exchange for a pawn? I don’t see how it sets up anything advantageous beyond that...

if bishop takes on f7 and the black king retakes then you get to unpin your knight with a check on black king

Bxf7 ...Kxf7 Kg5+ ...K(somewhere) Qxf4 and the queen is protecting the knight and the black king is in precarious waters

there might even be more forcing tactics here but the position should tickle your tactical feelers at the very least

remember- you can always play the comp moves (especially in these tactical situations to see more to a continuation)

If the king takes your bishop, then you can throw in the nice Ng5+ which opens the discovered attack on the Black's bishop.  When your Queen takes the bishop, you will be a pawn up, ahead in development, and Black's king will be a bit exposed.

should be Ng5 (fat fingers on iphone)

The point is after He takes Kxf7, you have Ng5+ and you see there's a check to opponent's king and at the same time you have launched a attack from your queen to his Bishop on g4 and so he has to move his king and you can take his bishop and you are now up a pawn!

Ohh nice thanks everyone. I definitely did not figure out the Nxg5 move but I see now. Awesome.

fwiw your opening was fantastic - just missed a tactic on move 4- this happens a lot as you start out and even as you progress

it shows just how vulnerable f7 (and the other weak pawns in opening) is

it also demonstrates a vital difference between absolute and relative pins

but now you know and can add this to your growing nest of recognized patterns

lol thanks, yes now that I understand what was happening here the opening looks a lot better than I thought.

The kings ability to castle is also revoked if it moves. That’s a bonus too

And it will be stuck in the open unless he wastes several moves to hide it

I’m new here as well. What’s the crown symbol by your name?
