Chess Rating Progression

I Created My Chess.com account last year around December of 2020 and I was in the 500's for a long while. But coming Into December of 2021 I'm hovering around 1150, I've started taking it more seriously and studying, puzzles/books/ watching videos. Just a general question about how long it took people to go from 1100's to around 1500-1600?

Well done! Keep up the great effort.

I should take chess more seriously myself instead of partying now that I realized a year has gone by.

I think it depends on a lot of variables. How old are you? How much time are you putting in?

I think If I stuck to it,I could get to 1500 or so but it will take me a while because I don't have much time to study and I'm 45 years old so I'm starting chess late in life. I definitely don't pick up games as fast as I used to. I'm really good at backgammon but I've been playing that since I was a kid, chess I just started playing less than a year ago and I've been a little off and on with it.

Depends on how you study, how much you study, how talented you are, etc. etc. There is no saying how long it will take. There is a bigger difference between 1500 and 1100 than 1100 and 700. So be aware that it might very well take (a lot) longer. In general, I dislike setting goals, because it might start to demotivate you when actually everything is going well and you are improving.

It depends , i started in 2014 and i was just around 1500 in may , 2021 ( i first hit 1500 in 2018 ) . Then i had a sharp increase in rating and am around 1750 now

If you do work hard ( which i didnt ) , you can easily reach 1500 in an year

If you take a look at my stats, you can see my wave trend (rapid rating)
I tend to increase in rating in waves, and then hover on the same rating for a while. I got stuck at 1300 for a while, but now i've finally found my feet at the 1500 level. For me, it really helped to not play every day. Take a break, don't stress yourself over it, but when you do play, take your time and take it serious. Don't play blitz and convince yourself you're studying, as you're not. Play 1-3 rapid games a day, analyze them, what went well what went wrong. That will increase your rating the most

Unfortunately, the concept of diminishing returns applies here: if you spend 5$ for a bottle of wine, you get ... something. If you spend 10$, you may get something nice. For 15$ you may get something great, 20$ may still make a noticeable difference. Above 25$ it's really for aficionados only.

If you put a constant effort into chess, your rating progress will decrease. But you still will make progress. Listen to RAU4ever, especially when setting rating goals. How would you know if you are able to reach them? And if not, do you really care? Better set goals like: I want to improve my understanding of Rook endgames (actually, that is a useful goal for almost all of us).

back in the spring and summer of 2021, when i had ample time to play and study, I was getting around 150 points per month. I believe I hit 1600 after around 6 months of consistent play, and then I just stopped playing for a while. The rating growth did tend to go down when you reach the level where you can't just rely on your opponent's blunders and actually have to consider stuff like piece activity, pawn structure, positional play, etc

Rau4ever and Sred always offer very good insights.

You should get logical chess move by move by Irving Chernev. If you don’t want to buy it then the pdf is available online. It teaches you how to think in chess (for a lack of a better term) and simple ways to evaluate and make plans in the position. Many times I see beginners get lost and have no idea what to work for, and this book helps greatly with that.

Mqrr I have made the same observation. If I play too much, like driving too long and going into a highway trance, one can get into a chess trance. My board vision decreases and I start going on losing streaks. I came to this epiphany after losing 7 in a row. I have found my sweet spot to be 3 - 7 games per week. My mind is fresher and most importantly, I have better board vision.

Everyone is different by how much time they invest into chess improvement and also their learning styles and natural ability etc.

chess.com ratings of 1100 to 1500 took me roughly one year to do, but with lots of playing and time invested over that year grin.png

The thing is, everyone is different meaning that the way they study and approach the game is not the same. On top of that, it is important to bring to light how certain individuals have a bit more talent for chess than others. I have been playing chess for around 5 years, I have really tried to improve and get better these past 2 years and feel as if I am still getting stronger everyday. I think in general getting to 1500-1600 can be done within 1-3 years. I think with how you have progressed that you can reach it in 2022.

Usually it's a bit more than 1 year...to get from around 1100 to 1550 here if you play almost daily...so around 500 rapid games.

Of course you need to learn some opening and do a lot of puzzles usually.

It’s taken me like 3 months to get around 1500 from 1150

One chess teacher I heard of stopped running rated tournament for his students. The parents would see their kids go from 200 to 500 in a month and a half and 500 to 800 in another month and a half, so they were expected a 300 point increase every month and a half (i.e. getting above 2400 in one year starting with an 8 year old kid that just learned the moves) and they expected that regardless of how well various people tried to explain the diminishing returns concept.  When the inevitable happened and increases started slowing down (1000 instead of 1100, 1150 instead of 1400, etc) the parents thought that either the teacher was no longer doing things correctly and stopped sending their kids for lessons or that the diminishing returns were no longer worth the expense of the lessons.  When the teacher switched from official ratings to internal achievement points the parents still saw similar increases all the time and kept sending their kids for teaching.
