I hate to be stupid, but I don't understand the timing rules in games against other people online.  Like if it says "5 minutes"  well... what does that mean?  Who wins after five minutes?  or what?  And the ones that say something like 15/5, well shit, what is that??  sigh

A 5 minute game is precisely that.  Each side gets 5 minutes for the entire game.  If one side runs out of time, they lose providing the other side has mating material.  If not then the game is a draw.

15/5 means 15 minutes per side with a 5 second increment.

thank you IMBacon.  What does it mean for the other side to have "mating material?"  I just played someone who made a whole bunch of crazy irrelevant moves with many "blunders" and yet I lost after five minutes.. what might they have had that I didn't have?  thank you.

mating material means having enough material to check mate the opponent.

Say you have a lone king, and your opponent has a king, and a pawn,

If your opponent runs out of time, the game is a draw since you only have a king (insufficient mating material)

Now say you have a King and knight against a lone king.  Thats a draw since both sides have insufficient mating material.

You lost because you ran out of time.
