Continually Losing Despite Hours of Study

Laskersnephew: please don't do this. Don't use the same formatting for actual moves made in the game and sidelines in the analysis. It is extremely confusing and makes it hard to follow what is what. And also, the software can't handle it either so users can't click through the game.

Hello, we joined the site around the same time. I think you just need to play more instead of spending most of the time studying. Beginners will lose a lot of games in stupid fashion. That's just the way it is! I feel like the last thing you should be worried about right now is your rating. Just play more and analyze your game. Good luck!

@cegreen213 how long have you been playing chess? I also agree with RussBell who says you’re maybe doing too much study. What does your typical day of study look like?

Also I didn’t see anything rude about acid’s post. He was direct and to the point but I think he was coming from a good place. After all, you’re not here for us to tell you you’re the GOAT right?

If you’ve not been playing all that long then don’t worry about it, improvement will come…

Honestly, I don't know what to do anymore. I study HOURS every single day. And I just keep getting stomped almost every single time I play. The only time I win is when I play against my dad, and he has something like a 200 rating. Honestly, I'm feeling super discouraged. Like I'm just not built for this game. I just want to improve. Improvement is what drives me in all areas of life. And I just keep running into a brick wall here. What do I do?

At your level you need to engrain into your brain just a few key concepts. You should not be studying anything before you are 1000 rating online.

1. Constantly scan for hanging pieces. Your latest game I see your opponent just hung a free rook and you did not take it. Studying will not help you see this. You need to start engraining habits, and implementing them by playing tons of games.

2. Checks, Captures, Threats.

Its the cheat code to chess.

3. Develop, castle, then start attacking.

Play 5/5 blitz until you stop blundering random pieces, and start picking up all your opponents pieces, then start building in Rapid, and eventually you can start studying.

You're hindering yourself with "studying" instead of playing as many games as you can at this level.

What do you mean "clicked through the game easily"? That is impossible, any time a comment appears with a move in it, you can't click on, it just stops and asks which line you want to follow.

Acid, you aren't entitled to be rude to me just because you're better at chess than I am. I know there are things that I need to work on, thus this post. You give a bad name to what should be a game built on camaraderie and good sportsmanship.

Apologies if it sounded that way. The same thing applies to me. Having the wrong assumptions, having the wrong reactions when my expectations get crushed. I've told you, you attack too much. Focus on the defense. Why do you attack relentlessly? That's what I've tried to express, that you treat London, which a solid system, as much as Italian is with White, like your opponent plays f6 every move. Stop doing that. Also, the title of your post sounded dramatic. Now, you sounded offended. Say thanks for receiving advice, even if you don't like it.

I didn't think you were rude at all.  Truthful, and sometimes the truth hurts some people, I realize, but I read your remarks as constructive criticism from someone offering an honest appraisal.  No more, no less.

Even so, it speaks well of you that you offered an apology anyway even though (IMHO,) it was not necessary at all.  You are clearly an individual of good upbringing and good character, and players like you are the primary reason why I like this site so much.  Hat-tip to you, friend. 🙂

Thanks, @toxic_internet

Truth hurts -  (GM Ben Feingold's favorite expression).

As you well pointed out, I looked at two of his games and saw his hybris (attacking too much). Am I wrong? I don't think so. Is my advice the best OP could have received on this site? I doubt it. But it is slightly better than the usual take a break, solve more puzzles. I didn't mean to offend him, I wouldn't have wasted my time, in the first place, to write that. I have my own despair, overdoing something, not doing something else, not understanding 80% of what's going on in a position. Below 1000 to 1200, there's no major difference. Maybe hanging pieces less, seeing a mate in two-three more often. I simply can't see how I could have been condescending. If you want to keep in touch, DM me, we could play some games together. Cheers!

Join a chess club and play there, then you can see yourself slowly play better over time because you are playing against the same people repeatedly. Treat online chess as practice.

And above everything else, don't become complacent because you have studied. Your opponents have also studied.

I just heard about joining club.
It's interesting.

Do you have any clubs recommend?
Thank you.

Hi.

I'd just like to let you know that I do not study, but I do also continuously lose.
