dealing with a memory weakness?

Hi

Sometimes I forget a piece of in a particular place for a reason, e.g. defending something, and I move it, and then sometimes I lose the piece if twas defending.

I think my opponent - black - made that mistake in this game, leading to me checkmating him. He moved his rook to defend himself from a checkmate, then he moved his rook, forgetting it was sering an important purpose there. And I checkmated him.

How does one avoid that kind of mistake?

Getting into the habit of double checking moves to see what your opponent can do before you move will help you.

Back when I first started to play, people had to use real chess sets and boards. Players would often hold their fingers on top of pieces after they had moved. They would then look around. The move wasn't final until they had removed their finger. As long as their finger was on the piece, they could take the move back.

That obviously won't work when touch move rules are in effect but if you wait to make a move until you mentally look around, you can accomplish the same thing.
