Don't waste Time

There's a specific type of player in chess.com which I don't like. Those players when they see that they are about to get checkmated in next few moves.. they do nothing but just waits until his/her time runs out. These people waste the entire time that's left in their clock. I don't understand why they do this.. they are going to lose the game anyway... either by checkmate or by running out of time. They should resign if they don't feel like playing anymore and go practice solving puzzles and improve! This will not waste either of our times. Today I was playing with an opponent. It was mate in one no matter what move he did. When he saw checkmate is coming... He drained his entire 7 minutes and he lost as abandoned game. Things like this really makes me angry.

Sadly this is a recurring theme for online chess, which will never end. If you have enough time left on your clock, it may be best for you to simply go do something else for a bit. As far as why, some do it out of spite, and some which should know better, just act thoughtlessly. Report them, and when this site garners enough reports, action will take place. Probably starting with a warning.

I hear this often - Their time to do with as they wish. The problem is that is to short.

. Should be written as, their time to do with as they wish, as long as they are playing the game. When someone punches the button to play a game and gets a match, to my senses it signifies an agreement to play the game between both players. I am sorry but if someone is stalling, that violates the agreement. Stalling is an act of not playing. It also appears that this site disagrees with stalling, since moderators often state hit the report button.

“I don’t find it a big deal.” That’s probably cause you do it yourself. This is a big problem on chess. It’s happened a couple times to me on blitz. We need to report these people. They are not playing real chess.

You are wrong. Stalling is against the rules. Those guys should be reported.

Played a game recently where my opponent kept taking a long time to move, in retrospect he was obviously thinking (or looking at moves online) it was quite frustrating as I really needed a pee, to be fair once the clock was down to the last minute moves kept coming in haste. I didn’t get to checkmate as his time eventually ran out, anyhow I got the win. Hey ho, that’s online chess and when you have a playing pool of several hundred thousand people, they ain’t all going to be the same in how they play the game.

If you are playing a 10 min rapid game, it means you are willing to commit up to 20 mins for that game. I know how frustrating playing against stallers can be, but there is nothing you can do about it. Watch youtube, listen to songs, take a washroom break if you find yourself in this position. Maybe report the player for stalling (I am not sure under what category it comes under, maybe un-sportsmanship), and then play another one. Don't let others ruin your mood.

I don’t mind the other player running out of time. Maybe they are thinking and trying to find a magic move, maybe they are stalling, but they are losing either way. I’ll just pop the kettle on and make a coffee, and enjoy my time being ahead 😎

If you encounter anyone doing this, please report them! This is against site rules. You can read more in this knowledge base article.

Those people should stop, they just want to have a chance either they think you need to do something else so you resign, also what more worse is waste my wi-fi data.

There are a few different ways in which people can use up all their time in a losing position:

  • Realising they're in trouble and spending a lot of time trying to figure a way out
  • Connection issues
  • IRL distraction (doorbell goes, phone call they have to answer, etc.)
  • Stalling in the hope that the opponent gets distracted assuming they have abandoned the game, then playing one move ten seconds from the end and hoping they can flag their opponent
  • Running down the clock out of spite to waste the opponent's time

The first couple are I think completely legit. You're entitled to use all your time to think if you need it. If you consistently have crappy connection you might want to stop playing until that gets rectified but it's not like you're setting out to cause problems. Being called away mid-game might be suggestive of poor organisation but everyone has lives and a lot of what happens in them is unpredictable and more important than chess.

The last two, though, are unacceptable. And it's generally obvious when they're doing it: if called away in a lost position most people will just resign.

I agree that if you start a game you are agreeing to set the necessary time aside to play, but that doesn't mean that when you're beaten you're entitled to use up all the time on the clock just to waste your opponent's time out of spite. That's just pathetic.

And it's against the site rules. Don't do it, and if you encounter people who do, report them.
