Exchanging Pawns / Centre Control

Hi!

I tend to open with the queen’s gambit or French defence and after reviewing my games I realise I’m pretty consistently late to exchange pawns in the centre.

Was wondering if anyone had any tips/principles/ rationale for figuring out when to do this?

Also if you do have a look at my games and see anything other bad habits please let me know?

The general principle is to break open the center if you have a lead in development and your king is safe.
