Where are explanations of how things work?? Like what a red square means, why I can’t make certain moves that are possible with a particular piece even if maybe a mistake, how the times puzzles are scored? This is a very useful app, but without a Help section it’s often quite mystifying!

But I don't think it covers red squares.

Where are you seeing a red square? (A screenshot would help.)

Did you make a pre-move?

There actually is a help section and it is at the bottom left of your screen.

Ooooh. I didn’t pull the menu all the way down! Doh! Thanks!

I’m not sure what a pre-move is!

OK, the Help menu explains what a pre-move is. But I’m playing the computer, doing puzzles, etc. Not anywhere near playing a real opponent.

And I can’t figure out how to reply to you in this thread. I was somewhere else (maybe on the browser, not the app?) when I was able to quote someone else and then reply.

Red square: You've either clicked the right mouse button (or visited Moscow). Doesn't mean anything really, it's just a tool for highlighting when coaching/streaming etc.

Why can't you make certain moves that are possible: because they're not possible/illegal for some reason, eg: castling through check or something.

Pre-move: something you can enable in settings to allow you to 'queue' a move while waiting for your opponents response. You basically 'move again' when it's not your turn, and the move, if still legal, will be executed immediately as soon as your opponent moves (and cancelled if no longer legal).

Puzzles: not sure of the exact algorithm but the quicker you get them right, the more you score in general.

Good luck. Danny Rensch has done a lot of 'how to' videos on YouTube.

That red square in the picture just means "the Knight has been touched".

That's weird; I've never seen that (red square as shown). Is this something new, recent?

I don’t think so.
