Five 5 Simple Steps to Boost Your Rating (For Beginners)
Starting your chess journey on Chess can be tough. If you are stuck below a 1000 rating, do not worry. You do not need to memorize heavy books to get better. You just need to fix a few common mistakes.
Here are 5 simple, actionable tips to help you win more games and improve your rating.
1. Control the Center and Protect Your King
In the opening, many beginners attack too early or move the same piece multiple times.
The Rule: Move your center pawns (e4/d4 or e5/d5) to control the middle of the board.
The Goal: Bring out your Knights and Bishops quickly, then castle immediately to keep your King safe.
2. Look for "Checks, Captures, and Attacks"
Before you make any move, take 5 seconds to look at the board. Ask yourself these three questions about your opponent’s last move:
Checks: Is my King in danger? Can I check their King?
Captures: Did they leave a piece unprotected? Can I take it safely?
Attacks: What is my opponent trying to do? Are they threatening my pieces?
3. Stop Blundering Free Pieces
Most beginner games are won by the player who hangs fewer pieces. A "blunder" is giving away a piece for free.
Tip: Before you click or release a piece, double-check the square it is landing on. Is an enemy pawn, knight, or bishop guarding that square? If yes, look for another move.
4. Play Longer Games (Rapid)
Playing Bullet (1-minute) or Blitz (3-minute) games is fun, but it will not help you learn. It forces you to play too fast, leading to panic and mistakes.
Recommendation: Play 10-minute or 15+10 Rapid games. This gives your brain enough time to think, calculate, and spot your opponent's traps.
5. Use the Chess Puzzle Feature
Tactics win beginner games. Chess offers free daily puzzles that train your eyes to see winning patterns.
How to practice: Spend 10 minutes a day solving puzzles. Do not guess the moves. Calculate the solution until the very end before making your first move.
