What triggers a stalemate?

You have be even more careful when your firepower is far too strong against the opponent. The risk of stalemates is very high.

Yes, before you move always make sure after your move your opponent can make a legal move with his King. Also, if he only has a few pawns, often they cannot move, so be sure he can make some kind of move after yours.
If it is a player's turn to move, they have no legal moves, and their king is not in check, it is a draw by stalemate.
