'Best by test' - Fischer
90% of beginners who play 1. e4 haven't even heard of Fischer, let alone know this statement.

e4 is most common because at lower levels it is a safe move and mostly the pawn people notice first because it is in the middle.

Most people are right-handed, otherwise they would understand that d2-d4 is the better move.
it takes a while to understand that Nf3 is the best opening move

Okay, you can get away with 1. Nf3 after 1... d5 2. d4!!

I prefer:
1. Nf3 d5
2. e3
or
1. Nf3 d5
2. c4

e4 is preferred because it positions a pawn to have control of the center of the board along with opening up the path for the queen and bishop and it is a simple move.
e4 is so popular because it is the simplest, in most of the opening when you play e4, a beginner can focus on attacking oponnent's king without any complex positional play. And e4 is in my opinion just more fun to play.

Openings like Queen's gambit (d4) are tricky and advanced openings with many lines and people don't have a lot of freedom to choose and opening of their will but e4 is simple and both sides have many openings and options to choose from.

None of this is even remotely true.
1. e4 has as much theory as 1. d4. And one is just as "simple" as the other.
