Im not an expert so I would wait for some better advice but i was around 900 on blitz but recently moved over to rapid. I think rapid gives more time to think, and I went up to 1060 on rapid. I think its better for newer players who are learning, but then again Im no expert.

This was helpful.  I (finally) stumbled upon Rapid by creating a Custom Challenge / Click Options / Choose 20 min.  It took longer to get a partner, but I wasn't pressured by the clock anymore.

I played an error-filled game ... and found myself wondering what was taking my partner so long. He had me, but he timed-out.  (That seemed unfair because he really was closing for the kill.)

You'd think Rapid would have helped me make fewer blunders.  "Ha!"

i too am feeling quite depressed, if the name isn't evident enough. i'm also lucky enough to have crippling anxiety with regular attacks. though it is not chess or being bad at it that has me down and out. i actually sort of sought out chess to (or really anything that wasn't often frustrating, and could take my mind off of how bad things really are). what i'm getting at is, perhaps if you try to view chess from this perspective (as an escape), and not something you absolutely need to be great at. you might be less depressed, and if you can't do that consider another hobby. not that i would recommend anyone giving up on something they are passionate about typically but if it is unhealthy it may be  worth the loss. one thing is certain though, always seek help for depression. there is no shame in seeing a psychologist, a therapist, or even just talking with someone assuming you have someone worth opening up to. also i dont know if you have taken into account that if chess  is what is truly depressing you, then it would seem you likely have many other things in life to be happy about. focus on those things in times of dismay.

There is also no shame in taking medication

I am a triply qualified therapist, but it didn't do anything for me.

The pills did !

hey i feel you man. i see a therapist, and a psychologist for my medications regularly. and while they aren't some miracle fix, they do help. in the meantime im just like yo elon can you perfect neuralink already and kill my bad mental already?

The girl that I "thought" was my girlfriend never really was my girlfriend.  She never slept with me, but used me to get some sort of power trip, and slept with everyone else but me.  We've been "friends" for over 15 years, and "dating" for 2 years.  I'm not depressed about that.  Grow some balls dude.

Give it time. It can take a while for the improvement to come through. it's a good sign you are feeling more confident.

Exactly.

Well honestly it is easy to say that. But how do I stop when I feel that i keep going down! I've never won to a person ahead of me in rating.

Hang in there, all of you. Chess is in no way a pursuit that can be excelled at immediately. It is the most complicated game known to man. I have been playing for three years and accept whatever improvement I can get. It is a lifelong pursuit. Just enjoy the ride.

It sadly doesn't work like that

Hey. I'd be very happy to coach you past 1000 and beyond, if you'd be up for recording some sessions for my YouTube channel. I've sent you a friend request.

Again ?

Of course when I was a child ... and I learnt Chess with my help of my grandfather... I played only Rapid.

What sense to play Blitz if you should think long enough ... 1 or 2 minutes...  over every your next move as every newer should do ?

hey dude here's the advice i read for stuff like this on another website so credits for all my next words go to @Avetik_Chessmood (He is the guy who wrote it on his website!)  so there is this thing called 'Snowball effect!' so, when you win, you get more confident against other players and end up playing better then you earlier expected! so. when I'm in good form, I play more games then usual! when I am losing a lot, that is again Snowball effect! You keep losing confidence after every game you lose and then play WAY Below your actual level! so I think this is what happened to you! You lost your confidence after losing many games.... the best thing to do in such a situation is to take a 2-3 day break! that will boost your mood and then get back to playing! that has helped me a lot!
P.S. If you want to read the original Article with great explanation, then it is here! -: https://chessmood.com/blog/5-crucial-steps-to-stop-bad-results-in-chess  and https://chessmood.com/blog/how-to-multiply-good-results-in-chess

The very first step you have taken is excellent, sharing your thoughts here. I would recommend you to play with a friend while explaining your thoughts and listening his thoughts as well, also trying to apply the ideas you have learned and trying to explain problems you are facing. This is going to begin the process of solving your problems for sure. I hope you enjoy this amazing game!

Sweetheart, let me tell you something. I'm a 1000-1200 (rating always fluctuates) and I've been playing chess for at least 25 years, I practice tactics all the time, and the thing that keeps me going is I just like to play. A lot of my friends are 1700+ so I'm always getting my butt kicked. The puzzles are fun too, but I get frustrated [when I get some obvious ones incorrect]...

+1 Good advice. Chess rating changes A LOT and most players don't realize just how much fluctuation (up or down) is normal - even when you are doing "everything right" in study and learning.

Here are two links for the op and anyone else here: it may be helpful. The first hyperlink is a forum thread that helped me realize how much rating fluctuations are normal (frustratingly) and the second is a blog that I hope can serve as a valuable resource to any chess player - especially at the beginner to intermediate level.
