As a beginner who has learned a grand total of 0 openings.... are you sure learning 72 openings is a good use of your time?
After all, you only play with one opening per game.

Well, I'm glad were just friends and hang out everyday and you know how many openings I know. Great assumption on your part. But, you're free to believe what you want that's fare.
Let me break it down this way, sense I'm a beginner that doesn't know anything yet "according to you" I have look at ALL the popular posters on my thread here to evaluate there games here on chess.com. Just in-case I have to play one you.
Instead of spending time looking who to demonstrate in this example let me just get the next person up that is on my list which is "magipi" I won't go REAL in-depth here because he doesn't know I'm doing this, or even evaluated his play, and same for the others, so it just be real quick.
He mostly plays bots, for the majority of his play, which nothing wrong with that "I'm sure he has his reasons which is fine." He loves the 'Queens Pawn' opening and specifically the 'Caro-Kann' which he has used 192 times. After that is 'Slav Defense (52) which is part of Queen's Pawn opening, 'English (23) which isn't part of Queen's opening, 'Gunfeld Defense (7) is part of Queen's Pawn, and there's a whole lot of playing other openings just once such as 'Kings Indian', 'Alapin', 'London System', 'Nimzo Indian' and about 13 more. So it looks like he's trying different openings seeing which ones he likes most. If he doesn't like it on the first try he'll move onto another one. When he finds one he likes he'll trying it a few times to see how it works out. It so, it sticks around "like the Caro-Kann and others just playing around with, experimenting maybe, such as the Gunfeld Defense.
Now I could be right or wrong and it doesn't matter to him "or shouldn't" but it gives me insight to him if I ever play him. First off I would use an opening he has NEVER used and give it a go. I could still loose "again which is fine, I'm in my learning phase" so I just chalk up upto a lesson learned. If I lose or win with the opening I choose to play him I might look into more myself and see if I like it depending on how I played it against him. Which is probably kinda what he does playing against the bots. I use the bots for experimentation, trying new stuff out, exploring openings, etc too so I get it.
Is this guy serious or is he just trolling?
Obviously this is your first post and you didn't bother ready ANY of this threat except maybe the first paragraph of the first post and them made your post.
Yes, 140 post into this thread, and paying for Diamond membership it sure looks like I'm pretty serious and definitely NOT a troll. Because we all know trolls are not going to spend money on anything. Probably because they have none!

Actually, I read quite a few of these posts. And my conclusion is that you are either A) one of the greatest trolls in the history of chess.com or B) deeply disturbed and extremely ignorant. But I'm not sure which.
So let me get this straight...you initially wanted to try to become a GM in 6 months. and when it was pointed out to you that the logistics alone would make this impossible, instead of amending your goal to something equivalent--like achieving a 2500 Elo or Glick, or even achieving a 2500 rating on chess.com, you decided to take on the goal of beating one GM in an online game within 7 months. Does that sum up the situation? Well guess what. You wont. Well you wont without getting illegal assistance anyway.

Well let me cover this best I can. Yes I did post that the new goal is to reach 2500 rating "here on chess.com" by May 2024 but also the goal of beating a GM at least once during the month of May to prove some form of accomplishment to MYSELF! Because I know "not one person on this thread" will EVER be on my side and that's just a given.
Glicko, I'm not sure of, because a lot of that is based on the number of games you play and that kind of a system can be gamed "so to speak" kinda like the same system here on chess.com in how it works by "if you lose to someone 200 point higher than you and then come back and win your next game, you kinda get an inflated score because of that. This is what I have noticed both here and on Lichess but it is a less gamable system than Glicko is.
So, hope this clears things up a little. If not, then just wait until May 2024 and you see how everything turns out.
Guys, guys, guys. You are missing the riddle here. The forum heading doesn't say said Grand Master; just GM. What GM stands for is anybody's guess. Seriously, don't waste your time with ChatGPT. If you want to improve without going through the time consuming learning proper opening techniques, then play a lot and learn from your mistakes. Breaking triple digits should be your goal.

I think "not one person on this thread will EVER be on (your) side" because you have absolutely no understanding of the difficulty of accomplishing this feat. Going from absolute beginner to 2500 in six months has never happened in the history of chess. You may as well have the goal of becoming the starting center for the Los Angeles Lakers in six months. Its just not going to happen.
I set high goals based on a popular quote "Shoot for the Moon. Even if you miss, you'll end up among the stars." - Norman Vincent Peale
If others don't feel comfortable setting high goals for themselves then that totally up to them. And nothing wrong with that either. We all go through life with what makes us comfortable "well not all of us and that sucks for those who don't have a choice in how they live but that's getting into a whole other topic entirely." But we do in life what makes us comfortable. Some people are comfortable with high pressure and most are not.
For instance, I believe I mentioned this before but here goes again, I'm not new to this kind of thing because I'm halfway through another "impossible thing to do" on the internet that also has it's own YouTube channel. This started on Jun 22, 2018 with a public bet, from a billionaire friend of mine, that I couldn't become a billionaire within 15 years. So this bet ends Jun 22, 2033. This means I am close to halfway through this bet (Dec 22, 2025) is exactly halfway and I am not doing too bad. This is according to all those following the bet and some are actually hedging there bet right now.
So, this isn't foreign ground for me to be in. And yes, I could not make it "as everyone is hoping" and I lose. That's not really fine for me because I take my challenge personally but I'll take it as a lose because my "win to success" ration in things like this currently is 58/42% and even is sports betting a win rate of 58% is a profitable win rate that even beats the house edge.

Whatever. If you are hell bent on making a fool of yourself, who am I to interfere? Let the "I told you sos" begin on May 1, 2024.
Ok, it is nice to know that you're a believe that setting goals are only useful for setting goals that you 'Know' you can reach? Then what's the purpose of setting goals? I guess it's a 2023 thing with all the wo*e stuff going on, I don't know. People that don't want to reach, don't feel comfortable stretching there abilities, seeing exactly what they are capable of. There's definitely too many people in the world today that are terrified of losing, not reaching a goal, etc so they make it super simple so they know they'll reach it and won't fall into depression.
As I said before, if that's you then fine nothing wrong with it. Each of us are our own person and responsible only for us. And if you like staying comfortable in life then nothing wrong with that. But my belief is that you only live once so might as well enjoy it the most you can.
I can recommend a good read for you, although I personally don't care for the author, but it's a good book with a good message. That book is "Be Obsessed or Be Average" just a Google search should be enough to find it. Not that you'll bother but just letting you know. I mean finishing a book is some work and does take a bit of time, so there's that!

Sorry, Lonnie. But your logic is a bit faulty there. I dont believe in setting goals that I know I can reach. I believe in setting goals that CAN be reached. Yours cant.
Ok. Im done with this thread until May 1, 2024. Good luck, Lonnie. And BTW, two of your rapid wins on this site look pretty sus. So don't assume you are going to skate by using an engine.
In my opinion, getting GM in 6 months is probably impossible
Seems you have falling into that group that doesn't read the threat and just clicks on it to post from just reading the title. Not intended to be an insult, but to those with common sense, this makes you come across as a troll just wanting to but in and stir things up because you're too lazy to actual read that post and get a context of what's going on. But don't worry, that's about 99% of the posters here so you're in good company really.
Just doing my normal transcribing YouTube chess games to PGN files "with full comments" that are available on my Github page for for.
But, someone asked me yesterday about why I study players? Especially the ones I'm going to play or might play? Easy, I believe EVERY GM does this "at least all the ones that I know and have talked to do" and here's an actual example of one saying it. Hans Niemann vs Andrea Botez in playing her for a date timestamped link just so you don't waste time. Granted he could be fibbing a little but I do have no doubt that he didn't study. Maybe not years "as he said" but he did spend some time analyzing her play. I already know both her, and her sisters play "Alexandrea" along with most other big YouTubers. Again, it helps me memorize my openings and middlegame play by analyzing and transcribing there games to PGN, etc. So great benefit for me. This is why I'm giving my PGN files away for download because I'm making them anyway for my own benefit so sense I have them might as well let others enjoy them who want to. And don't worry about me wasting time. I actually have a full program that is specifically for making PGN files with all the bells and whistles too. So I can make a PGN file as quickly as the game is played, pretty close.
I do hope no one thought I was making these PGN files by hand? But yes, before anyone ask, I have all the games they played in this video in PGN format. With comments
This is not necessarily the dumbest part of the whole comment, but certainly the funniest.
Glad I could provide some entertainment for you on a Wednesday. But hey, everyone learns differently. This is one of the problems in our schools believing that every kid in the glass learns the material the same as the next kid does and that's just not the case. But does the school system care? Not at all. Push them through.
But, I'll do what works for me and you do what works for you. The only thing that matters is the end result. And I'll find that out in May 2024.
