Hard stuck at 700 rapid

Sort:
tkmatt260p

After rising from 300 elo to 700 elo in 3 months, my rapid rating starts to plateau.

I mainly play the London with white. With black, I play the Scandi/Caro against e4, and the Dutch against others. I play mostly 15|10 now when I have the time.

I tried hard not to blunder pieces to simple tactics, and find simple and forcing moves to attack, but my opponents just surprise me with some crazy moves and I have to defend. Basically, I will lose all of my games when I find myself in a defensive position.

Any recommendations (e.g. tips, learning resources) for me as a newbie? I feel frustrated with how dumb I am at chess and really want to get to 1000.

"play the London with white. With black, I play the Scandi/Caro against e4, and the Dutch against others." ++ OK

"I play mostly 15|10" ++ Excellent. But do you use all that time? Most chess games are essentially decided before move 30. So spend all your time before move 30 and finish the game on increment alone. That gives you average of 40 seconds per move.

"I tried hard not to blunder" ++ Blunder check before you move.

"my opponents just surprise me with some crazy moves" ++ Consider all opponent's moves.

"I will lose all of my games when I find myself in a defensive position."
++ Defense is difficult. Study some defensive grandmaster games. Example:

"really want to get to 1000." ++ It is mainly a matter of blunder checking to reach 1500.

Just don't blunder, blunder also comes within a few moves so critically check ok?

Chess improvement takes time and dedication. Don't get discouraged by setbacks or losses. Instead, focus on the learning process and strive to make incremental progress with each game.

Hi! My name is Lauren Goodkind and I'm a well established chess teacher based in California! I love helping beginners out, so I have some ideas for you to get better.

  1. Attend my FREE online workshop every Wednesday at 11:30pm Central time. You can ask me questions in real time! I’ll be happy to analyze your chess games, teach you opening traps, endgame techniqes, and more! Here’s more details:

https://www.chessbylauren.com/blog/FreeOnlineWorkshop

2. Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side. Always as, “If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?”. Do this for every single move! Your goal is to never make any silly blunders!

YouTube is your friend. Watch Gotham Chess - IM Levy Bozman and Chess Vibes - NM Nelson Lopez. Both explain things in so much detail it's hard not to learn stuff.

Simply devote a quarter hour every day to solving chess puzzles.

It can be longer, but it should be a time you can do daily, longterm, without losing motivation.

The better you get at puzzles, the easier you will gain awareness of the full board, avoid blunders yourself, and spot blunders of your opponents.

Some say thats enough to get you to 2000, but thats probably a joke. But blunders still happends a lot at 1000 where I am right now (well, I'm approaching 1100 and I'm probably still underrated).

This is one of my recent losses with the queen’s pawn opening. Can somebody give me some advice on how to improve? I have a sense that I will stuck at this rating range forever if I continue to play like this.

tkmatt260p. Just went through your game. To refresh, At move 25 you blundered knight with QF1. And then you missed mating attack from bishop and Queen. I am not that high rated but I would like to add some points which might help you . When I was 700-800 rated , players try mating attacks during the middle games with queen bishop battery mostly . So always look for where the bishops are pointed at. You had an advantage throughout the game so I can safely you can cross 1000 rating mark soon. Before playing each moves just make a Quick Look whether you can go for pin, fork, skewer , double attack or some combination. It is hard to find at start but soon you will start noticing easily(TBH it’s hard for me also to find combinations) . Get an overall idea for your openings via several speedruns available on YouTube or any other learning platforms. See how they attack. Most of all , before moving any piece just make sure you don’t blunder any piece, take your time before each move. Before making any exchanges, make sure to calculate whether at the end of it you don’t leave some piece undefended.
Anyways, Good luck for your future games.
This will serve as a reminder to me too! :)

how to learn to play chess??? My rating about 200

Compadre_J

My recommendation is to play the Crab Opening!

It is an old opening I refurbished!

I made the line very simplified so beginners can play it and have fun.

Play as much games possible and don’t get disheartened if you lose few games. It’s ok just to learn simple openings which follows basic chess principles like Ruy Lopez. Just look up how to beat fried lever because many players go for that. I started with Vienna opening(and I still stick to it ) and learnt caro Kann for black after 900 rating. Try solving some puzzles as a warmup and it will help you improve board vision too.(u can use free puzzles on lichess) Try looking for undefended pieces of yours and opponents and try not to blunder. Also , just looked up u play blitz and bullet a lot but it could help if you play 1-2 rapid games a day and take time before making any move keeping in mind the undefended pieces throughout your game.

I give lessons if you'd like to take your game to the next level,

Could easily get you to 1500 in a few months.

I am surprised a 700 knows these systems and openings. How about you ditch these and make random openings on what feels right , and everytime you are punished for bad moves, you will get an intuition on patterns you don't want to repeat. I personally have no idea about any of those names, and I haven't plateaued yet. If anything, I expect my rating to get a major boost when I do learn book moves, but I am holding on for now.
