Have you ever lost your chess ?

Hi all,

I've gone from 1447 to 1260 in ten days after year around 1350. Has someone else ever experienced such a loss in such a short period of time ?

I would felt less alone if it happened to someone else grin.png. Is there a cure ? Is there such thing as a Chess orverload or moments you just suck because that's life ?

Yes to both tongue.png

Try playing when you've had enough sleep, enough to eat, and you're not distracted (emotionally or otherwise). Warm up with a few unrated games or puzzles. That fixes pretty much everything, but even then it's possible to have a bad day. Be realistic with your expectations (if you're stressed you're not going to play your best) and forgive yourself for losing.

Yeah, I tanked from mid-900s to 835 rapid two weeks ago. I responded by doing a lot more tactics puzzles and playing a lot more, and have since bounced back up above 1000. Your performance varies and ratings aren’t perfect, so it’s not that unusual to vary.

Thank you for your answers!

It's completely normal. Sometimes your mind becomes less receptive to the game since you are burnt out. Taking a break and getting enough rest and living healthy will help.

Last week I lost 100 points of my Blitz rating in one session. I was tired and unfocused but did not feel like stopping. That was not the first time. I honestly do not care.

There's a move in freerunning called the Wall Spin, that is absolutely notorious for being something that has to be relearned multiple times before someone can do it on command..  Like, you literally do it multiple times in one day, then the next day you have to relearn it from scratch like the first day never happened.

Whenever I feel I am slipping backwards, I think about it, because you have to slip backward multiple times before you go forwards. It is just how learning how to do something works.

You are clearly a bit burnt out. Stop playing for a while. Just study your preferred openings and puzzles for a while. Did you know that you can actually improve a lot by not playing for a while, if you are genuinely interested and have the basics down. Your subconscious will work on it for you while you're sleeping, if it's not overloaded with new information from recent games.

Without any data other then my own experience I consider this as normal. I think my strength is about 100 under my peak rating and can easily drop 200 under peak.

Luck is involved as well as bad luck (especially the opponent you are matched against). And on top of this luck or bad luck I get a confidence multiplier. On a winning streak I feel in control and I see more. That leads to more wins. The opposite works too I am afraid.

Hang in there.

My solution is to go back to solid chess. Double check if al my pieces are defended. No attacking before full development. No playing around with delayed castling. Etc. That sometimes works.

enough sleep helps a lot, as i observed when i am lack of sleep i lost most of my games but when I have enough, i won even in the tournamentshttps://www.chess.com/awards/mokmafih/arena/2217477

When I was more nooby, I somehow managed to drop 700 ranking points and lose 13 games in a row!

(The players were much better than me)

(I stayed at 300 for an age until just now to when I’m nearly on 500)

Getting to a new rating plateau is one thing, staying there is another. You might be able to get to 1400, but if u can't stay there comfortably, you haven't fully leveled up.

Also when you're on a losing streak, be sure to have some emotional control to stop before you go too far down.
