How do I get better at chess?
nklristic

Do not play speed chess for starters. Improving players need to take some time to find a good move.

If you have the time, read this:

This is a general guide of sorts that can help you improve your game steadily. Welcome to the site, I hope you will enjoy your time here.

Play a time control that gives you enough time to think each move. You need enough time to check and see if any pieces on the board are undefended and under attack. On your opponent's side this means free pieces, on your own side it means you need to correct it, defusing the threat with either more defenses, moving the piece, etc. At your rating there is often free material to grab that determines games. Review your games looking for these kinds of mistakes on both sides and whether it was taken advantage of. Post your games on the forums with some of your thoughts on the moves, (you can copy the PGN from a game and when you use the "insert chess game or diagram option" in a post, you can paste it there.) Right clicking on a move (the written form of it), will offer you the ability to comment on it.

I could probably dig up some example games from your game history to show you what I mean.

It shouldn't be, and I don't see any indication that it is. The bottom right square of the chessboard is white. This means that the top left square on the chessboard is also white, if that's what you are confused by.
