the London system opening but I read that it's doesn't improve your game.
Can you expand on this?
Hello guys
I'm a D-class chess player and I want any opening that will improve my tactical better. I am playing right now with the London system opening but I read that it's doesn't improve your game.
Can anyone help me please?
There are a number of active opening systems, but there's no guarantee that you'll like or even understand what they're about.
This is the thing: Playing an opening doesn't make you better or worse. The difference comes from the work you put into it, alas, knowing and understanding the ideas (the plans) that may arise, which also includes the typical tactical nuances. For instance, I hardly if ever played the Tarrasch or Semi-Tarrasch in competition because I never fully understood the play with or against an isolated pawn. Not to the point of not knowing what to do, but to a degree of high precision as is required when playing OTB against titled players.
So, my advice is to check the games of some master you like and enjoy, and see what openings does he use that lead to open or semi-open games (1.e4 doesn't have the exclusivity here). Then go through some well-annotated games of those systems (+40 is better), paying attention to the points where the annotator explains why this or that. It's also advisable to study the games in chronological order because it makes it easier to grasp (and store in memory!) which plans aren't used anymore... and why.
Once you finish with a system, you expand by including some more that may suit your tastes and talents. This is what most successful competitive players do: Becoming real experts in the lines they play often.
Of course, I have to recommend my personal favorite openings that have helped me get to the National Master level! With white, I recommend going for 1.d4 and with Black, I recommend the Caro-Kann and Dutch Defenses. All of these openings (like any other) have a multitude of variations, so I won't get too caught up in the minutiae. However, I will refer you to my YouTube channel, on which I just uploaded a stream in which I play 10+0 games and provide insightful commentary and analysis. I dive into the openings in quite a lot of detail (both during and after each game), and I hope anyone who watches it finds it useful!
