Help with the Ruy Lopez?

Hey all! I’m having a spot of trouble with the Ruy Lopez. The opening usually goes ok, 1. e4 d5 2. kf3 kc6, but when I play bb5 to threaten the knight, I get pawn d6. So if I capture the knight, it’ll be an even trade since I can’t capture the pawn. Tips?

"3...d6 ... Black defends his pawn on e5 and prepares ...Bd7, neutralizing the pin of the c6-knight. This is a solid plan, with a single drawback only, namely that it allows White to carry on with his development undisturbed. A characteristic type of middlegame arises after

. White enjoys a space advantage and easy development for his pieces, but Black's position has no weaknesses and  is intrinsically sound, if - for the moment - a little passive. …" - GM Paul van der Sterren (2009)

Even in the case of 3...a6 : 4.Bxc6 dxc6 5.Nxe5 doesn’t really work too well anyway due to 5...Qd4 and Black is slightly better.
