HOW AM I STUCK ON 500 ELO
I just lost 5 games in a row
I was at 480 Elo. Rose to 525 Elo and stayed there before tonight. Now I’m back to 480 Elo and I’ll probably drop further.
I’m so done. I was told that all it took was a working brain and an understanding of how the pieces move and you’d be at 800 Elo within a couple days. Instead I’m stuck here.
Genuinely flabbergasted. I might just delete my account and start over, that would be easier than this.

Whoever told you that doesn't know what they're talking about.

Do you study chess? Puzzles? Read books? Review your games? Watch any chess content creators on youtube or twitch?

First, I’d like to preface this by saying I posted this while absolutely tilted, and I probably lost cause of that, but I calmed down. Yes, I do puzzles (I try to do at least a couple every day), I do try to review my games and I use the free websites mainly to review them (EWCMF or something like that? And another one I forgot the name of). I do watch instructional videos, not Gotham chess, and I have an understanding of tactics, I recently checked out a book on tactics from the library. I just feel as though I should be at at least a little bit of a higher Elo level based on the effort, or at the very least making some discernible improvement. Although maybe there is something wrong with my practice regimen, I’m not sure.

You’ve already made it to 525 once. That means your ceiling is higher. You're just tilted and overwhelmed right now. Trust the process.

Thank you for the encouragement. What is a ceiling, if I may ask?

The guy who told you that was lying. Chess is a difficult game, and getting better at it is hard.

Also, you surely have a working brain, but you also need to use it during the game. Don't just play a good-looking move in a few seconds. Use your time and think.

This is your last lost game:

With 9. - Qg2, black threatens the h1 rook and also threatens mate-in-1. You happen to have 2 good moves in the position (Qf3 or Rf1). Instead, you quickly played 10. Be4 (??) which defends the rook but allows mate.

Don't do this. Don't play random moves. As I said, use your time and think.
