I don't have much to add, basically just what the title says

No mystery, have a think what the best move in that position is, they will probably play that.

You start with asking what your opponent tries to achieve with his/her last move. You first check for tactics. Is it a threat to deliver a checkmate, capture a piece, set up a fork, etc? If none of that is the case (or at least you have convinced yourself of that), you can start thinking of what the move means from the strategical point of view. Is my opponent trying to take control of an open file or create a weak pawn in my position or exchange a bad bishop for a good knight, etc... there's just way too much here to cover it in one post.

But start with tactics, it will already take you quite far.

Something that could help is using the flip board function and looking from your opponents point of view.

You just try to put yourself in your opponent’s shoe. Look for best moves you feel he/she will play. Keep on doing it until you will be able to see that your opponent(s) does move what you felt they will move.

It’s an important question to ask. This will help you avoid bad situations especially the higher up you go. Sometimes it’s a bad idea but it can never hurt to see the idea. Sometimes you make a bad move against it and your opponent will punish it. Just learn from it and you will improve
