How do I get better?

The biggest bang for your buck early on is definitely tactics. Puzzles are the best way to practice tactics. Rook pawn endgames are also very common and unintuitive so good to learn although it's a deep topic.

On the Chessmaster program I recently won against Tick in time 15m+1s permove and so I will explain in relation to my game :
1) d4 even if they will tell you the opposite I advise playing several openings because the program records all the games and the different bots remember its games and after a while they will find "the fault and play on our weaknesses" then the problem of always playing the same openings is to develop a rigid way of playing and the defeats "hurt a lot more".
1)...Nf6 "It's been a long time since I played on Chessmaster" and I don't really remember what Tick plays as an opening, if I play 1)...d5 I'm afraid he will play secondary openings like the London system or 2) Bg5 so I prefer 1)...Nf6 to go into openings where I have strategic plans like on the Grunfeld, KID, Benoni
2) c4 g6 3) Nc3 d5 4) Bf4 I don't know anything about opening anymore, 4)...dxc4 sounds no good 5) Qa4+ if Tick doesn't want to bother (with the idea after taking control of the center with an e4) or dirrectly 5) e4 and Tick has a pleasant opening to play.
4)...c6 by default I advise playing timourous, positional and castle fairly quickly 5) cxd5 Nxd5 because it falls back a bit into "a Grunfeld pattern" 6) Nxd5 Qxd5 they will tell you that it is a mistake to play your Queen in "the opening" but no imo it is good to have a centralized Queen if she cannot be attacked by a Knight forcing her to lose a tempo and I don't want to play 6)...cxd5 because I get out "a Grunfeld pattern".
Actually I'm not looking to play the best moves but good moves where I have strategic ideas or where I can sufficiently understand the position because notably 15m+1s per move is not 2 hours and calculating is tiring. 7) Qd2 Bg7 8) e4 Qxe4+ imo the most effective strategy is to gain material, exchange pieces and achieve endgame. Before playing the move I look to see if there is a tactical trap because Chessmaster bots play moves that seem stup*d but where immediately afterward there is a tactical trap against the most obvious move 9) Ne2 o-o 10) f3 Qd5 11) Rd1 Qxa2 now I have two more pawns so if I can exchange the Queens I will do it without hesitation because the advantage will suddenly become much stronger 12) Be5 Be6 exchanges must be made when it does not improve the position of our opponent if I had played 12)...Bxe5 dxe5 the d-pawn is no longer isolated and "also weak" 13) Bxg7 Kxg7 14) h4
chess is a difficult game where there are often danger and resources and therefore we should never sell the bear's skin before having killed it 14)...h6 15) h5 g5 16) Nc3 Qa5 17) Bd3 Nd7 18) f4 Nf6 19) fxg5 Qxg5 20) Qxg5 hxg5 after the advice I give is to study the endgames of Rooks

It's just a matter of self confidence , believe in your own natural ability and before going to sleep loudly repeat these words a hundred times " I am a great chess master" with in a short span of time see the results
