I started about a week ago. I don't recall seeing a place I could choose. It just gave me 800 out of the blue. So that's where I'll start. I haven't played any live games yet, so I have no idea what it should be.
How do ratings work on this site?

I started on 1200 in January and rapidly dropped to my present 950 ish where I bounce around playing well then playing like an idiot. Playing real people stressed me out a lot at first but I'm getting used to humiliation now.

i started on 400, got up to 1200, and went back down to 900. very sad ;-;

I think the meaning was, how do you get a rating on the site. I'm wondering this too.
I understand the bots could be overrated, but does.playing bots mean you won't get a rating in here?
Yes, playing bots will not get you rating points. Only by playing rated games against humans you will be able to gain or lose rating points. In the beginning your rating will fluctuate a lot but after several games, gain and loss of rating will be smaller.
I see now what you mean by "fluctuate a lot". I just finished my very first live game. I chose 20 min. and think that's about right for me because I didn't feel rushed and I finished with 4:55 still on the clock. That single game took my rating from 800 to 1162. That's a huge jump for one game.

yes. first few games greatly impact your rating to get you to your correct rating range as quickly as possible.
The pleasure of playing between humans is the essence of chess.
