Lots of times I think “I’m having a nice night, let’s ruin it with some chess”

For me personally I started 4 years ago at 700, took a 1 year break, came back at 1200, took a 2 month break, go to 1500 and got my acc hacked.

In his math, he assumed 20 minutes! It would have to be less on average!

I play a game 30 minutes

1600 is not hard

Not hard if you practice well. I have 2000+ rating with not much effort at age 14. Just practice at our weak points not studying everything.

I'm 11 and stuck around ~1050 rating. I am for sure clearly cursed. I am cursed in everything. In studies also, I get only 99.8%. That is nothing. 100% would be something... 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

be proud of yourself. you will improve soon

lol ... i think 1600 is intermediate level ...

Interesting, coming from a 1410 blitz. I personally think the boundaries between beginner, intermediate, and advanced are very diluted. At my very unimpressive 1100 or so rating, people play like anything from what I consider 800 to 1600, at least until they (or I) make a huge blunder. 1600 is definitely considered intermediate, but 1100, a point where most players have a firm grasp on the game, is considered beginner.

Everyone is different so the only answer I can give you is to share my experience. I have played 750 games (maybe 2-3 per day) and studied a bit, to get to 1600. I particularly enjoy the review feature for games that I don't "understand" (games I win that I thought I was losing, and vice versa) - it helps pin point the exact decision that lost or won the game. Before playing regularly I was a casual player all my life, but never very serious. In rl I always try to play against strong opponents. My main study focus has always been openings and endgame, because I feel the mid-game is just about getting in place for the mate and making sure you don't lose essential pieces or compromise your defensive system. In my opinion getting to 1600 is not achievable for everyone, but most players who approach the game seriously should be able to get there in time. I hope this helps and good luck.

It’s great to see your enthusiasm for chess at such an early stage. Reaching a 1600 rating is absolutely achievable, even if you’re starting at 21 — it’s definitely not too late. With consistent practice, learning fundamentals, and regular game analysis, many players reach that level within 1–2 years. If you want to progress faster and avoid common beginner mistakes, structured guidance and personalized coaching can make a big difference.
