A coach could help you to improve rapidly, assuming you were willing to put in the effort (s)he would require of you. By rapidly I mean much more quickly than you could typically do on your own, even with diligent study. You might give it a try - perhaps for a trial period to see how it works for you.

I’ve worked with a coach in the past and it was worth it especially if you have the funds and commitment.
When you do hire a coach, find one that can teach. Also, outline you goals so that you can formulate a plan and manage expectations.
I suck at chess. I've been playing for about 2 1/2 years but I play as terribly as a noob who started 3 months ago. How can I study chess so I can do well? I want to go to an OTB tournament soon and I don't want to embarrass myself. My rating is about 275 USCF online blitz last time I checked.
