how to improve rating

Hi.
It might be as simple as just winning games but how do improve my chess rating.
At the end of a game when my rating goes up or down it’s never by a consistent number.
What’s taken into consideration when it comes to scoring/rating after a match?

It mostly depends on rating difference between you and your opponent. If you win against higher rated player you will gain more for a win, and you will lose less for a loss. If you win against lower rated player it is the opposite of that.

Apart from the rating difference it depends on how many games have you played lately. If you played 100 games in the last month, you will gain and lose less points compared to the case where this is your second game in 5 months. In the first case, your rating is established so that is why you gain and lose less points. In the second case, your rating is provisional, so you will need to play more games for it to be stable as in the first case.
