How to Improve with tactical Puzzles?

Hi All,

I recently read that beginners tend not to improve because they spread their study too thin over too many topics and it is best to focus on one area of the game. I was trying to learn a checkmate pattern, a tactical motif, and an endgame per week and I am switching strategy. I want to just take the tactical motifs, study them and do puzzles/problems using these motifs. Do you think this is a good strategy for improvement?

I also read going over puzzles you have failed is a better than doing hundred of puzzles. The problem I am encountering is when I go over failed puzzles, I am generally just as stuck (or wrong) as I was the first time. Do you have any advice for me in regards to learning from these failed puzzles.

Thanks,

Take the last tactic you missed.  There are things you always need to look for, for the side with the tactic:

1. Material advantage.

2. Space advantage.

3. Piece activity advantage.

4. Weakness in the opponents position.
