The English opening is an opening that begins with 1.C4, and it is a rather patient opening with allows black to take the center but forces them into playing E5 and not being able to play D5. The whole point of this is to not commit a central D pawn, and fight for the center with your queenside pawns. If the opponent lets you have 3 pawns in the center which can happen, those three pawns are most likely going to be the C, D and E pawns. The D pawn should only be put in if they allow you to have the center. However in the mainline of it, after 1.c4,e5 you respond with 2.Nc3, to prevent them from pushing their pawn. After that move you have officially entered the Reversed Sicilian, and there are many ways to continue after the most preferred response of 2.Nf6. You can play e4 now and defend c4 with your light-squared bishop on f1, and then you can continue developing out your knights and bishops and castle either way.
