How to see whole board

Hello guys, I started playing chess few months ago and I played over 1500 games. Can't get past 750 rating but I am kind of happy with my progress. My question is, how do I see the whole board in terms of, new moves opening by every move. Sometimes game will develop on one side of the board for example and one bishop move on other side will open a whole new tactic. Or if opponent is attacking, I kind of don't pay attention as if chanves are opening for me, I only focus on survival. Why is that so?
