How to unlearn openings, lines, and popular checkmate patterns?

When I started I used analyse the board and would play the most logical move I am capable of thinking.

Now I know several openings, lines, and checkmate patterns. I can analyse the board quicker, I know better techniques, but I can no longer think! I am stuck in the realm of what I have learnt so far.

When I play a game now, usually I play some preset moves, and when the opponent plays something different, I no longer think, mostly in openings, instead I play what I am habituated to play in that number of move.

How to get rid of this bad habit?

Play Chess960 or some other chess variant.

If that doesn’t appeal to you, then play a different new opening that you don’t know for every new game you play, and never look them up after your games, simply analyze on your own (re-invent the wheel at your level of understanding). Rely on your thinking method.

Start off slow and easy. Then speed up along the way.
