My rating when I began was 700, it dropped down to 580, and now it nestled at about 650. How do I improve my rating and get unstuck?

Your rating in what?

Whatever rating you are stuck on, play more games of it. You lose, rating goes down, you win, rating goes up

Hi! My name is Lauren Goodkind and I’m a respected chess coach and chess author based in California.  I'm glad you want to improve your chess skills.

Here’s more ideas to help you get better.

  1. Attend my FREE online workshop every Wednesday at 11:30pm Central time. You can ask me questions in real time! I’ll be happy to analyze your chess games, teach you opening traps, endgame techniqes, and more! Here’s more details:

-Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side. Always as, “If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?”. Do this for every single move!

-Play with a slow time control, such as G/30 so you have plenty of time to think before every move.

-Beginners tend to move too quickly, so in general, think for at least 10-15 seconds before moving.

Your job is to never make any silly blunders!

-I recommend two books for you: “50 Poison Pieces” and “Queen For A Day: The Girl’s Guide To Chess Mastery.” Both books are available on Amazon.com. Both books are endorsed by chess masters!

- Check out the 500 puzzles for beginners. These puzzles are unique and cannot be found anywhere else: . These puzzles are endorsed by chess masters!

-If you are serious about chess, I highly recommend you hiring a chess coach to help you.

I hope this helps!

Rating fluctuates a ton naturally! Losing rating isn't ever fun, but the focus should always be on learning and improving, rather than just gaining rating numbers. If you learn and improve your overall ability, then your rating will naturally go up to match that new ability. Here is a story of something which happened to me a few years back and also what happened about a month later:

In the meantime, I recommend mostly working on chess opening principles for your opening, tactics puzzles for your middlegame and studying basic theoretical endgames and basic checkmates for your endgame.

The puzzles is self-explanatory. Here is a blog post of mine for opening principles https://www.chess.com/blog/KeSetoKaiba/opening-principles-again and here is a video from my YouTube channel on a foundational theoretical endgame all chess players should know:
