any advice? no offense, but im not a nerd.

old_acc_mm

nobody below 1200 needs any chess books or study of openings - keep playing, try to understand the mistakes you are making after each game, and try to avoid them

Most people should automatically be 1200-1500 by playing a couple hundred proper (>=5 min) games seriously.

"... In order to maximize the benefits of [theory and practice], these two should be approached in a balanced manner. ... Play as many slow games (60 5 or preferably slower) as possible, ... The other side of improvement is theory. ... This can be reading books, taking lessons, watching videos, doing problems on software, etc. ..." - NM Dan Heisman (2002)

There is this new chess improvement method for people don't want to do any hard work, study, or practice, called the pop tart method training method.

Step 1- you find a really warm blanket and put it in the dryer for ten minutes on high,

Step 2-pick out your favorite flavor pop-tart and put in the toaster for three minutes

Step 3-grab your warm blanky , your hot pop-tart and find the most comfortable couch in the house.

Step 4- bury yourself under the warm blanky and enjoy your pop-tart

Step 5- this is the important part, Close your eyes and imagine YOU are your favorite chess player (Magnus, Fabio, HiKaru, MOrphy, Capablanca, Fischer, etc.) really imagine yourself playing just like them. Dig in, feel the energy and passion. Imagine making brilliant moves! Think about that great feeling and rush you would  get by defeating strong players.

Step 6- now go out to chess.com and start playing bullet chess, and blitz chess and

Step 7- continue getting your a$$ kicked as the only way to really get better is by doing the things you don't want to do.

Reminds me of the time one of my golfing friends remarked to me that he knew he needed to take golf lessons, but was reluctant because he did not want the golf instructor to change his swing....

If you're not willing to become a nerd, you won't improve.

Why do you need to learn to play yourself?

Do not play bullet or blitz games but only slower like 15min + 10 sec..or slower...30 min are great and check with an engine after to see all your mistakes. And do a few hundreds tactical problems like 10 a day if you enjoy them.

kindaspongey

"... Most internet players think that 30 5 is slow, but that is unlikely slow enough to play 'real' chess. You need a game slow enough so that for most of the game you have time to consider all your candidate moves as well as your opponent’s possible replies that at least include his checks, captures, and serious threats, to make sure you can meet all of them. For the average OTB player G/90 is about the fastest, which might be roughly 60 10 online, where there is some delay. But there is no absolute; some people think faster than others and others can play real chess faster because of experience. Many internet players are reluctant to play slower than 30 5 so you might have to settle for that as a 'slow' game." - Dan Heisman (2002)

That is the worst way, you can't think and blitz is more for fun. Slow games. You have the time to think and play serious chess. And, if you are loosing, he won't think of winning on time, he will think how to last the longest or look for tactics to win. No more excuses, do you still see one?
