If you enjoy chess, play and study chess! Set attainable goals for growth and go for it. Enjoy the journey. I'm just a beginner (at 61 years old) and I enjoy the game even though I will probably never be a very good player.

Yes, sometimes it makes sense to give up on a hobby, and focus your time and efforts on something else. I'm not as excited by chess as I used to be. Life is short, so make the most of your remaining time.
There is a lot of replies talking about enjoying chess. I do enjoy playing, I just don't enjoy that it appears to progress beyond a certain point you essentially need to study endless different versions of other peoples matches so you can replicate something similar yourself.
Essentially if you had an extremely good memory and understood how the pieces moved you would stand a very good chance of beating somebody with a less good memory.
I guess I want to play intuitively, rather than through study. There is clearly a ceiling for how high you can reach with this approach. I imagine I have hit mine.
Playing against bots and playing against humans are quite different experiences. I do believe you can improve certain aspects of your game both ways, but playing against other people is detrimental.
I have looked at your profile and you have only played 8 games, and you actually won 3 of them. You're not nearly as bad as you might think, and you played just too little (almost nothing).
I do believe you can become good at chess if you keep at it. Improvement will come over time. But don't just play against bots, face real opponents and try not to worry about your ranking.
But if you do want to give up, that's fine too.
Hi 00snook
Like you I picked this ganme up again in my 40s after a long long time not playing. Personally I've found daily chess to be the best for me as I find I can't calculate quickly enough for a quick game but can take my time in daily, plus I can try out moves on the screen first which helps avoid calculation blunders (it's allowed in daily)
I think that in order to ENJOY Chess you need to be able to put your EGO on a shelf and just give it your best shot. Please do not quit. I have felt exactly like you're feeling. Take it slow. It's not the quantity of games it's the quality. Cheers
