There is only way to know for sure! ;)

Which do you enjoy more? Art or chess?

I believe it will be extremely difficult to go from beginner to IM at the age of 45. Of course it is possible. Wilhelm Steinitz was a world champion in his sixties, having rapidly improved in his late twenties. Alekhine was also a fairly late bloomer as they go.

One thing I would say is: unless you absolutely love the game of chess with your heart and soul, then there is no point starting this journey. If you enjoy playing, then even if you don't do well it will still be worth it anyway.

If you want help, I am a 19 year old 1641 rated player with experience coaching beginners, and can point you in the right direction. Send me a PM if you are interested.

IM = International Masker?

Yes and 2400 elo or a bit above usually;it's a very strong level of  play that very few can achieve,it usually take up to 8 to +10 years of very hard work.

Why are you only 1600 at rapid games, you should be 1900 here at least?

Before I ask my question, I'm hoping to receive honest answers and hopefully no degrading or insulting comments.

So I just turned 45. I've been playing chess off an on for most of my life, but never really sat down to study or take it that seriously. Now I am at a crossroads where I have the time and income to commit to studying every day and going to tournaments on weekends. Outside of work, (40 hours per week), I can devote as much time as necessary to my chess.

So after qualifying all of that I am hoping to get honest answers about how possible it is to become an international master at some point in my life. My hope is to play very competitively and also teach chess locally. On a more esoteric note, I also want to have the advanced knowledge to truly appreciate the beauty of chess at the deepest of levels.

Or: would I be better placing my time, money and energy in something else such as art which I also enjoy but would be a second to chess.

So, there it is. I'm hoping to get feedback and not ridicule for asking such a question. Thank you in advance.

Probably not but you do not need to be an IM to really enjoy the nuances of chess!

Do your best to get to 1600 here;that should take you at least one year or two and than try to get to 1800 here....trust me at that level you will feel that you made a lot of progress and you will know if you want to spend a lot more years to get to 2000 here.

I just looked at one of your game.....you have to think deeper before making a move! do that for each move that you make and you will win a lot more! and think about what your opponent is trying to do!

When you get to 1500 here you will feel that you now know how to play chess.

Because you will have to think on every move!

Most of the players here between 1500 and 1800 don't even do that

They play too fast even in 30 min games...

Alright y'all, if you watched Disneys' movie 'Queen of Katwe' starring Lupita Nyong'O then you already know the answer(s) to this question.

Bgabor91

Dear Chessfriend,

My name is Gabor Balazs. I am a Hungarian FM, fighting for the IM title. My top ELO is 2435. I have been playing chess for 21 years. I won the Hungarian Rapid Championship twice (U16 and U18).

I love teaching chess and it is very important for me that both of us enjoy the lessons beside the hard work. I have pupils almost all the levels from beginners to advanced players (1100-2200 ELO).

Why should you choose me?

- I have a widespread opening repertoire (a lot of openings are analysed by strong Grand Masters).

- I have a lot of chess books in PDF and Chessbase format, so I can teach you the main middlegame plans, the art of calculations, famous chess games and the endgame theory.

- I have elaborated, personalized training plans, which help you to improve your skills effectively.

- I help you analyse your games deeply, so you can realise your mistakes and learn from them.

- I am really flexible and hard-working person, the quality of my work is really important for me.

Please, contact me (balazsgabor1991@gmail.com), if you are interested in working with me, I am looking forward to your message.
