Kid chess - skills tokens

I participate in coaching a kids (age 5-12) chess club with 4 other coaches.  There are 18 kids in this club.  Each session we teach the kids a new concept like castling or pins, etc.  Then the kids play chess with each other for about an hour.

The kids seem to understand the concepts we teach but rarely do they apply the concept in a game.  They play as usual and don't seem to be improving.

We thought of incentivizing the kids to learn more quickly by establishing a system where the kids can earn badges (or tokens) for different skills by demonstrating the skill in a game.  Our concern is that kids will compare each other based on who has the most badges and chess will become less fun.

Do you have any thoughts on this topic.

Thanks in advance,

Will

No idea man, sorry.

I know one kid's club used a ladder system, where the kid's names were on a list. The top person was the "best" and the way it works is if you beat someone higher than you, you take their spot, and everyone else moves down 1 slot to make room. If you beat someone lower, you move up one. When the lower player loses, they stay where they are.

You can also make rules where you can only challenge someone within ____ spots of your rank.

By making it competitive some kids try to improve, but sure, others may not enjoy it.

I know chess.com member ziryab has worked with kids a lot. He had a system similar to what you're suggesting. You might shoot him a message.
