Missing the opponent’s resources

Hi All,

I have started tracking my in-game errors about a month ago, and the biggest area where I make mistakes is "Not considering relevant candidate moves for the opponent – missing the opponent’s resources".

When I solve tactics, if I make an error, it is usually due to the same problem - not considering a good defence option (sometimes quite obvious) for the opponent, or not identifying counterplay.

The first step to solving a problem if identifying it - done that.

What specific targeted training can you recommend to cure these types of errors?

Thank you.

This is my biggest weakness too...  It's the mindset which effects my acuity— always when I'm taking stock of my advantages in a position... What has helped me most is deliberately checking for counterplay, especially in better positions.

Many defensive resources are found because they're the only viable option— the "too perfect" principle— I try to think for my opponent as much as I think for myself, if not more.

But as one familiarises or re-familiarises themselves with tactical patterns, it'll become much easier. e.g. I can read Arabic, but I'm not so familiar with it that I can read it upside-down...

The training you do to make your moves, is the same as looking at what moves your opponent can make.
