I've been losing more and more games to stupid mistakes, I haven't been improving and it's making me lose a major amount of morale. What should I do?

I did this for again till this week, dropping from 1050 to 700 , largely due to two things, ingraining mistakes and not caring about results after a while, to the point of throwing no care at my game. If your doing either or both these things then stop making things worse. No play is better than bad play, break the cycle and get back to it when your thinking better.

This was an amazing response, thank you so much

Yes firstly slow down.

With every move your opponent makes, try to work out their plan. Which new pieces are they attacking, what are they no longer defending?

Next try to formulate your own plan - not for tricks but to take advantage of weaknesses in your opponents position. Make sure every move you’re thinking of making doesn’t fail to a tactic though.

If you give yourself time to think and honestly consider your opponents actions as well as your own you should start to cut out obvious mistakes. From there, look back on your games and try to spot errors, patterns etc that you missed during the game.

Post an annotated game with your thoughts to the forum and get feedback from stronger players.

Rinse and repeat.

I'm not going to write a lengthy response simply because chess.com is starting to censor me again and I don't like writing something and having to rewrite it again.

I do not know how helpful I was to beginners on chess.com, because I generally didn't get any response when spending a lot of time trying to help people.  I am going to stop posting on chess.com, simply because chess.com decided to start censoring me again, and also because of the fact that maybe some of the people I tried to help, are just troll accounts.  Maybe you are a troll?  I don't know.  I'm not accusing you, it's just that, for whatever reason, 12-14-year-olds have nothing to due but make fake troll accounts.

I will say they attempted to censor me before I wrote about the Nieman case, that is going on right now.  All I was doing was trying to help a beginner understand something, yet chess.com decided to try and stop me from doing it, for "whatever" reason.

All I will say about chess.com is this.  They can call anyone a cheater, and no one can't speak against it.  No form of appeal whatsoever.  That in and of itself, doesn't actually prove anything, yet, I feel, if enough people get together, we may be able to clip their wings, and not let them just decide who or who isn't a cheater.  Given this power, I don't believe they are not abusing it.  But, as I have said in what chess.com erased for no good reason, that is just a belief I have and doesn't prove a thing.

For whatever reason, chess.com chooses to censor what I write.  As a corporation, they can do what they please.  To me, it seems like corporations have more rights in this country than people do, sometimes at least...

All I will say about your play is that in a couple of games I noticed you don't look at what is left behind when you are creating an attack.  In one of your games, you had a plan of attack, yet your opponent had counter-play.  Before attacking, look to see if it is sound, and see what your opponent can do in response to your actions.

Also, when your opponent attacks you, look and see what he is trying to do, and think about it for a long time.  Generally, when someone moves a knight to your side of the board, they are attacking....

Also, you often play your bishop in a bad stop, in front of a pawn, with both white and black.  In general, don't do that, it caused you to lose those games, or lose tempi at the very least.

Play longer time controls.

Hi! My name is Lauren Goodkind and I’m a respected  chess coach and chess YouTuber who helps beginners out :

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP5SPSG_sWSYPjqJYMNwL_Q

Send me one of your games and I'll be happy to analyze the game for free on my YouTube channel on Sunday livestream from 1-2PM PST.  Ask me questions in real time!

This is a great way to improve!

Here’s more  ideas to help you get better.

-I recommend two books for you: “50 Poison Pieces”   and “Queen For A Day: The Girl’s Guide To Chess Mastery.”  Both books are available on Amazon.com.  Both books are endorsed by chess masters!

- Check out the 500 puzzles for beginners.  These puzzles are unique and cannot be found anywhere else: .  These puzzles are endorsed by chess masters!

-If you are serious about chess, I highly recommend you hiring a chess coach to help you.

-Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side. Always as, “If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?”. Do this for every single move!

-Play with a slow time control, such as G/30 so you have plenty of time to think before every move.

"I've been losing more and more games to stupid mistakes"
++ After you have decided on your move, do not play it.
First imagine it played on the board and check it is no stupid mistake. Only then play it.
