nervous to play people

I’m on here to learn so I can play chess with my son and spend quality time together. He won the chess championship at his school and I can now beat him about 25% of the time. It’s been a lot more fun since I’ve been on the app. :)

The "imagine everyone in the audience is in their underwear" trick works well for this. You just have to imagine that your opponent is anxious as well, even if it seems like they aren't. Because if you're never anxious while playing chess, especially when you're winning, you might just be dead.

This is a very common feeling known as "ladder anxiety," where the fear of being judged or losing rating points to a real person can be paralyzing. A great way to ease into it is by playing unrated games, which allows you to get the experience of competing against humans without any of the pressure on your stats.

You are not alone. I feel the same.
Although I like to know my ELO, I don't think the anxiety is for the ELO.
I like to play the Maia that plays more or less like humans.
I play it on Lichess and I have made some GUI with local Lc0 and the Maias.
I hope you get better.

And yet for some reason you've already played 8 games today against humans.

#7 You cannot play strangers with unrated you can only put unrated when you give a challenge, after giving a challenge to someone(maybe your friend) then just toggle the rated option off

The way I think about it: My rating doesn't matter, it's not like Im 2499 Fide and about to make it to GM. I am promising myself that I won't care about my rating until Im titled. (If that happens) (I hope by Freshman in high school maybe?)

Yes, I've felt that way. Ladder anxiety is pretty common both in and outside the chess world. I wrote a blog talking about how I managed to overcome it.

Play puzzle battle to get your feet wet.
Yeah, you will win some and lose some. But the trick is just to focus on the board and say "I don't care who the other person is."

#11 - Josh, while I definitely appreciate your encouragement, I do want to clarify that I played those games right after I posted in here and before I saw your comment.
