What are the best openings for beginners

The London system is pretty good. It's a general set of moves (d4, Bf4, e3, Nf3, etc) that don't require too much thought and get you into a playable position.

As black I'd probably recommend symmetrical pawn openings. If white plays e4, go e5. Or if d4, then play d5. Keep things simple, develop, and castle. Once you're more familiar you can explore other openings.
