Pawn Different Way to Kill a Piece?

So one time i took my opponents other piece with a pawn i dont remember quite which piece but i believe it was another pawn, but i want on top of him, like i was beside it and i jumped ontop how did it happen to work that time but it never works any other time? I'm so bad at chess
