Preferred response to Wayward Queen Attack

Which is your preferred response to the Wayward Queen Attack?

Option 1: defend the pawn, protect from the coming Scholar's Mate, and prepare a counter-attack

Option 2: Allow the pawn capture in exchange for more concentrated development and an early castle

Or perhaps you have an alternate response? What is your preference?

Definitely 1st option, everyone is going to struggle against an opponent with an extra pawn.

Neither. E6 or Nf6 for the first move stops the attack from happening in the first place.

I play the Sicilian Defense (1... c4) against 1. e4, and my preferred response is e6 (discovering a defense of the pawn by the dark-squared bishop, followed by Nf6 (developing with gain of tempo).

Note that the e6 pawn blocks Scholar's Mate because the bishop is prevented from attacking f7.

I prefer second option, that will get us the initiative. However if you don't like to sacrifice your pieces then you might choose first option, but then you will be playing a little passive. (Unless you kick the queen, ofc)

Why would you want to stop that from happening? If your opponent likes 2. Qh5, you should definitely invite it with e5 on the first move, and enjoy your superior game.

You are underestimating the Kiddie countergambit for sure. Even if white defends properly, black has some compensation. And if white does not defend properly (which is much more likely in a low level blitz game), white just gets crushed.

My opponent straight-up hung their queen when I used the Kiddie countergambit. That was an easy win happy.png

Both approaches are fine, and you can also add another couple of moves, like (1.e4 e5 2.Qh5 Nc6 3.Bc4) Qe7, and (1.e4 e5 2.Qh5 Nc6 3.Bc4) g6 4.Qf3 f5!?

ke7 best move

Avatar of prplt

the first one but instead of Nf6 you play f5 evil

Avatar of AlbAmchess

the correct move after 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 is clearly Ke7, bringing out the only piece more important than the queen and thus forcing white's queen to move to a square like e5

i usually play kiddie countergambit cuz i know it alright
