protecting your rating is a practice that high level players use at over the board events mostly.  If you're a GM and you don't want to get upset by a lower rated player, sometimes you just play for the draw to lose less points.

The income of professional players depends on their rating:
that is how they get invitations for closed tournaments.
For non-professional players rating is not an issue.
